One of Piers Adams' most unusual touring events is Dances with Gods - a lavish creation in music and dance based on the ancient Indian myth of Kama Deva. This major new work is an hour in length - probably the longest single piece in the recorder's repertory - and weaves diverse elements into a ravishing mythical tapestry.
Haunting, rhythmic and dramatic, Chris Gander's score combines Eastern and Western idioms to extraordinary effect. Piers Adams's recorder wizardry is exploited to the full in a kaleidoscopic display over an exotic, electro-acoustic background of sound, with a cascade of Indian percussion. Three dancers bring the myth vividly to life with a spellbinding blend of movement from modern dance to Kathak.
The world premiere performance of Dances with Gods took place as the opening event of the 1998 York Late Music Festival, followed by performances at the Komedia Theatre, Brighton and the Adur Arts Season. The critic of the Yorkshire Post wrote:
"The dancers were spectacularly sinuous, sustaining a low centre of gravity amid sensuous contortions in Alison Turner's evocative choreography. The music was often reminiscent of classical Indian ragas, highly decorative with a largely percussive backing. Occasionally it ventured into distinctively Western territory, delivering offbeat blues or rapid syncopation, all of which Adams took in his stride. Though never quite erotic, the overall effect was nonetheless riveting, a triumphant start for this adventurous festival."
